What is that bonnet? Is it worn by the band?

Mick,
It is an Officer's astrakhan beret. Originally worn with full dress. Decidedly ugly, it didn't last long being supplanted by the famous black beret. Bandsmen also wore a similar version and replaced for the same reason. The lower band on Officer's version was leather backed and OR's vinyl with anodised badge. Still collectible though. Both wore the brown, red, and green hackle as well. Clay |

Thanks! I also have an RTR heckle as well.
Was the brown, red, and green hackle also worn behind the normal beret badge? Mick

Mick,
Hackle only worn by bandsmen nowadays, and yes behind normal ano or white metal badge. It is not worn in normal everyday beret usage. Clay |

Hackle in the wrong way. Tank always moves towards the "green fields". Best wishes Gordon |

Hi Gordon, sorry about that, just stuck it in for the image. I often wonder how much I really know. It sometimes pays to think. Well enough of Sunday morning philosophy back to work, best wishes Mike
