I guess I am not expert enough to pass an opinion on the badge other than to say it is interesting........the first one that I have seen with the maker's mark (Tiptaft) in that position.

Yes, I have this on watch. Interesting version and looks OK at first glance.

Hi Bren
I would be very suspicious of this one.
I have had a couple and it is the opinion of several Aussie badge experts, that it’s a dud.
I have kept one of them in case they are wrong, but I don’t like it.
1) It looks like it’s a good casting not die struck. (roughness to the rear)
2) The definition on the front is not crisp and the back is poor esp. for an English made badge.
3) I would also have expected a slider although lugs could have been used.
Ive been watching this one but I wouldn’t pay much for it.
These have been coming out of the UK for about 2-3 yrs I believe.

I agree BC. Compared to my Tiptaft, it doesn't come anywhere near the quality.

Curious to see what it goes for.

Simon.

G'day Bren

I have had a look at your photos of the Tiptaft Rising Sun and in my opinion it has fors and againsts.

First the front of the badge looks good, a Tiptaft has a nice smooth surround to the crown below the suns rays, second the Tiptaft Rising Sun has lots of little dags (which are other wise found on a sheeps back side !) on the suns rays where as other makers have much smoother rays and no dags.

In his book on the Rising Sun, Cossum only lists the Tiptaft with 2 names one die stamped into the badge on the back of the flat section to the left of the slider and also on the slider.

On an origonal family WW1 Tiptaft Rising Sun that I have the section on the back surrounding the crown and under the suns rays is very smooth, whereas yours is very rough and I dont like the positioning of the lugs, on another from the same family member that had lugs (now cut off) they were on the bottom of the suns rays just above the scroll and against the radius of the suns rays.

Have a look in the Aussie section under the General Service Badge (Rising Sun) thread, there are several threads that deal wih the Tiptaft badges, I seem to have contributed to most of them and there are photos and lots of helpfull info.

I dont like the look of the naming and with so many other things against it I would give it a wide berth.

I hope that this helps

Regards from Down Under

Phil.

the badge is mine.

I'll withdraw it.

the story of these badges is here:

I'll withdraw the others too and sell them in a different way.

Hi BC, can you send me a link to a similar one for sale? and would it be possible to have a scan/photo of the one you hold?
