G'day Mark
This badge has been discussed many time here on the forum and if you do a search you should find all the info that you need. I don't claim to be an expert on the Nellies however my understanding is to look for the following features 1 the separation between the tusks. 2 the separation between the elephants tail and butt. 3 the placement of the lugs as far to each end, like yours. Using the above as a guide I'd say you have a good one, however others may differ. I hope that this helps. Regards Phil. |

It is correct to the period. This badge is actually one of the more common Victorian era cavalry badges. I can only speculate that this is partly because of the attractiveness of the design as a keepsake saw more being collected.
