Army remount service mess dress button?
Good afternoon
I think that this is probably a mess dress button. The maker's mark is unclear and the design is engraved into the obverse. Is it a mess dress button? Many thanks Martyn |

Hello Martyn
Possibly mess dress but more likely to be a blazer button in my view. Most, but by no means all, mess dress buttons were more ornate, usually flat or domed buttons with mounted devices. Roger |

Martyn, it looks like a blazer button to me.

Several cavalry regiments used incised designs for their standard buttons, this is almost cavalry, perhaps they did too.

Many thanks. I was thinking blazer but it may be a standard button which would be nice.

After reading the Wikipedia article I think it is a blazer button. Post 1891 the service was part of the Army Service Corps. Your button has a King's crown, which makes it post 1902.

Many thanks. Would the blazer be part of military issue or civilian private purchase do you think?

Hello Martyn
As far as I am aware blazer buttons were privately purchased for use on civilian clothes and cannot be considered military issue. Much the same applies to military hunt buttons that are often confused with blazer buttons. Just to confuse the issue, as Rob mentioned, several cavalry regiments used buttons that were flat with incised/engraved design that are exactly the same as blazer buttons but they were official issue and as laid down in Dress Regulations etc. Roger |

Many thanks Roger. Nice little button though. This could be ww1 or just post ww1 probably than.

Anytime from 1902 right up until the 1950s and possibly beyond I would say.
As these were unofficial buttons sold by tailors and the like anyone could buy them to put on a civilian blazer. The Remount Service existed until 1942 so it would have been quite possible for ex Remount Service personnel to be wearing blazers with these buttons on long after 1942. Roger |

Many thanks Roger it's a pity that the makers/tailors mark isn't clear on the back.
