Fascinating. John Waring's illustration JW1/658 has the XXII positioned as per the sign I posted. Of your two examples the XXII is higher relative to the shield in one case and lower in the other. Postwarden may well know when John published Identification Pamphlet No1 - this would help date the identification as a Sapper sign.
