Default Victorian naval button

Good evening

Hopefully got this one right. Victorian naval button 1891 - 1901. Backstamp Extra Rich Quality. Can this be attributed to a certain maker or narrower date?

Many thanks

Martyn

Default Victorian naval button

Victorian Royal Navy officers buttons had a lined background and rope rim between 1843 and 1891. In 1891 the lined background was removed from officers buttons and they retain a plain background to this day.

Many thanks, yes I meant 1843 - 1891. I put the wrong dates in. Do you know if the backstamp can date it more precisely though?

Many thanks

Martyn

Quality statements on buttons have been used during the 19th and 20th centuries. If you think it is worth spending time you may try to find exactly the same back die used on a dateable button. However, this back die may have been in stock for many years, making the entire exercise futile. Got it?

The floppy shank puts your button in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
