Default Bedfordshire Splodge

I have this Bedfordshire Regiment cap badge, which has an odd splodge just to the (viewer's) right of the lower arm of the cross.

I don't seem to be able to find any similar examples posted on the forum for comparison. Anyone seen this before on the Beds. badge?

With thanks.

Cool Splodge

JT,

If I havn't got one I've certainly had something similar in the past, I will have to look at my Bedfords, but I think I exchanged mine.

Looks like excess brazing overspill.
Cheers Tony.

Thanks, Tony.

Any views on the badge generally, at all, please?

I initially thought it was braize too, but decided it looks more like white metal on closer inspection. The display, however, on my phone heavily distorts when I enlarge images.

Just my pointless posting

Phil

Phil, you are correct; it is in fact white-metal. I'll try to get a clearer image tomorrow and post it.

Thanks.

Here is my example acquired this morning. I am convinced that it is a good badge but it does have several flaws (marked in red) and some light damage marked in yellow.

Badges to this particular regiment often seem to turn up almost disproportionately with the odd flaw or three, sadly, even those made in the nineteenth century as well.

Hope this image is clear enough to illustrate the splodge adequately:

JT doesn't look like excessive braze as I previously posted, could be the brazier held his torch in one place too long? Thereby melting the badge forming the splodge?
Cheers Tony.

Agreed, Tony. Perhaps a few too many sherbets down the rubber at lunchtime?

The top die is damaged,so there is nothing to push the metal down to form that part of the badge.

Hi Jelly,

This one has a near identical flaw to yours... But bigger!

Guessing the die continued to be used and the flaw got worse strike after strike.

I bought it circa 1997 up Camden Passage at the militaria market that used to be there on Saturdays. Believe it was from the ''4 for a tenner box'' (which contained restrikes but also a few genuine badges too).

Always been an enigma to me - I like the slider, it's hard as nails and it looks like it has been worn, but, rear detail isn't great and big question is would a badge with such a glaring flaw have ever been accepted?

Cheers,

Luke

If they were in a box of say 1000 badges and they put them at the bottom then the first anyone would know about it would be the poor old chap who's hand it was put in when issued.
