Hi guys thanks for all your help. Its interesting to see that original KK photographed badge, it looks so new, I would have thought it repro. That NDC badge is like the ones I had seen, only its a much better, obviously real example.

Nearly had a heart attack when I saw this on ebay. I used the suggestion and searched for 'Edward VIII EVIII'. I will be saving for quite a while if this is a typical price.

Phil,
Edward the 8th badges if issued and worn it would have been for such a short period of time.
Therefore they would not have had the amount of polishing and wear normally expected in a badge this age. Which is why they sometimes look so new.
Doesn't make it any easier to spot them from later copies.

Hi Phil,

The badge that you linked to is about the right price for an original.

That particular badge though does look remarkably like the fake that I had, a cross between an ORs and an OSD

67 people have had a look at it and no one has bought it, I wonder why?

From Norman Litchfield's research.
E Bty: the cypher was probably introduced for the Silver Jubilee (GvR),made by Firmin Limited - these raised words around the reverse - in cast wm, for GvR, EviiiR and GviR, all known with a slider, but GviR more common with lugs. Impossible with a GviR cypher to tell from the front if die struck/cast.
G Bty: All locally made. In cast brass, and in wm with GR cypher (there is no known example with the "v").
The full EviiiR cypher was rumoured to have come from "the silver of melted down rupees".

The right price

I wondered about it, bearing in mind what you had said about voiding etc. Also noticed the amount of views, but thought it may have been down to people like me having a gander.

Good point about them only being used for a year, I will see what I can find in respect of NDC badges, they seem to be a little less pricey.

Here is an example of the RE EVIII badge with only the centre voided where as the common copy have a voided wreath,

That's a variant that I don't recall seeing before Alan, it almost looks to be an unfinished (unfretted) example and seems to be very close to the voided fake examples that were mentioned previously, I wonder if this is the badge that these fakes were based on.

Given the loops on a badge of this period, do you have it 'pegged' as an officer's example, possibly gilded originally?

I am sure that the voided copies are based on Officers' badges.

This one does not seem to be gilded despite the loops.

And here is the mercurial EviiiR Royal Horse Guards in OSD bronze with a J.R.Gaunt London makers stamp.

Undoubtedly a genuine one.

It sold tonight for £268 which given that the pandemic will likely be a thing of history by the time another appears, isn’t I suspect a bad price at all.

I believe the badge came from a board sold via Thomas Del Mar’s at the recent David Jeffcoat collection sale.

That OSD is a superb badge. It reminded me that I had this badge languishing in my maybe/maybe not pile for quite some time. I rather expect it to be a clunker however.
