Default Staffs Yeo

An extract from our article on the Staffs Yeo published (in French) in Militaria (the source is the excellent Regimental Museum):

While stationed at Hadera, Palestine [in late 1941] undergoing mechanisation, the subject of dress and the black beret was discussed at a Commanding Officer’s conference for Squadron Leaders. It had been agreed that the other ranks should wear their Staffordshire knot badge of a circular red felt backing. The officers’ badge is larger and a more complex design, thought unsuited for a circular backing. The Squadron Leader of HQ Squadron suggested that not only on account of the shape of the badge , but also because of the “honourable position held in civilian life by our respected Second in Command, Major James Eadie, that the scarlet behind the officers’ badge should be triangular in shape.” Only later did the other officers realise that the red triangle was the trademark of Bass brewery – and that Major (later Lieutenant Colonel) Eadie’s civilian job had been sales director for Bass beer!
