The "X" also shows that this man was a volunteer, a member of the 2AIF.

A soldier from Victoria who was in the Militia would have had just the "V" as a prefix.

Here is an interesting tidbit that I once read in a book about the Australians in Malaya. An Australian jockey was working in Singapore, or Malaya.

When the 8th Division arrived he volunteered for the 2AIF and was given the prefix "MX". M for Malaya.
