As already mentioned, all patches I compared were printed on cotton coarse weave.

P. Lock's book seems to show the same difference on page 179 (bottom photo on the left). It could well be one of the variants mentioned by K. Joyce.

I said at the start that I thought these look fine, the backs confirm that IMO. As with many badges, it is the combination of different features that allow us to make a decision on good or bad. Whilst some find the more earthy patches as incorrect and the same for the vivid blue, others find them fine and original.
