Frederick,

According to "Badge Backings and Special Embelishments (sic) of the British Army" all DLI Bns wore a 2" circular green backing from 1943 onwards. The DLI badge illustrated in "From D Day to VE Day - The British Soldier" by Jean Bouchery illustrates the same circular backing but also shows 6 DLI wearing a red square backing. (I understand this was due to 6 DLI wearing KRRC appointments as when originally formed as Rifles Volunteers they wore 60th Dress).

This reference also shows ranks slides being worn on dark green backing. "British Army Uniforms & Insignia of World War Two" by Brian L Davis support this.
