FAA Shoulder Boards and Cuff Insignia
The officer you show in your picture is an officer of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) Air Branch. The 'A' shown identifies them as part of the Air branch of the Fleet Air Arm. This signified that they were pilots or observers. Most of the aircrew in the Fleet Air Arm during WWII were members of the RNVR.
