Hi David & MAP
I must say I tend to agree with MAP re Lot 196 and rather suspect that Bosleys have mis-identified this badge.
Dress Regs for 1883 clearly stipulate a silver cross with a gilt cypher on a blue velvet centre of which known examples exist. This particular badge also incorporated all the honours subsequently shown on the gilt badge (Lot 195) introduced sometime before 1891 when the Dress Regs were altered accordingly.
I would imagine the buyer you mentioned David knew something that Bosleys probably didn't and thus secured for himself a very rare variation !
In my opinion, Lot 196 is a rare and possibly unique sealed pattern originally intended for the 2nd Battalion (or possibly the 3rd) but never adopted ... those in Lot 195 & 197 respectively being the ones that were finally issued. Would very much like to hear from the specialist you mention. Regards Jeff
