Yes, it made them easy to remove. Insignia in the Middle and Far East was often attached with poppers or a pin, as they tended to be washed by locals who made money out of the trade. As they washed by bashing the cloth between rocks the insignia tended not to last well! It also adds to the fact they are theatre made.
You can look in the London Gazette to see if a citation is noted (look up 'London Gazette' and then add the details on the 'advanced search' page. Just tried but its currently not working.) Many awards did not have citations however so you may be unlucky.
