Officers in the SAHA always wore grenade collars with title 'SOUTH AFRICA' and other ranks without collar badges.
I have never seen a photograph of SAHA with those small SAHA collars and it is my opinion that they were either a private purchase cap badge or if produced during WWI, that it was for some other use and not as collar badges.
The Castle Museum has a nice photograph album and history put together by I believe the commanding officer of the unit and none of the photographs show small SAHA badges.
If someone can produce a picture of SAHA wearing these on the collars, I will retract my opinion above.
