V111 Recce Opinions

Hope you don't mind me butting in on this thread. I have attached a front and rear photo of a badge in my collection that I was given by my Uncle who although a Newfoundlander served with the Royal Artillery during the war. He had a small collection of badges and medals that were passed on to me when he died. This Recce badge was amongst them. I always wondered if it was polished and given to a sweetheart or if some members of the Squadron did this on purpose. When you look at the rear you can see that it was originally a other ranks badge.
Posted just to see if there is a known reason rather than a possible reason.
