Yes, you are correct in believing that no official trace has ever been found [to my limited knowledge] and yet it was most certainly worn in the Great War [photos in wear exist]. Dennis Edwards and I concluded that it was a demi-official Telegraphist badge. It never appears in PVCN or CR, nor in the the RACD ledger, so must have been private purchase from one of many outlets. Your embroidered T, for example, is different yet again from the one in my collection, which is Roman with serif.
It would be helpful to know when your man was commissioned, please, because that would give a date before which he might have worn the badge.
