Hi,
Your elephant with the upturned trunk appears to be a locally made collar/cap/sweetheart for the Gold Coast Rifle Volunteers. I've attached a few scans for your reference, and one in particular showing: Sir Frederick Mitchell Hodgson wearing a nice pair of these collars. The picture incidentally comes from a magazine that was printed in 1900 called "Black & White Budget".
"Sir Frederick Mitchell Hodgson: Born 1851; son of the Rev. Octavius Arthur Hodgson, Rector of East Stoke, Dorset. In Savings Bank Department of G.P.O. 1868-69; Postmaster General, British Guiana 1882-88; Colonial Secretary of Gold Coast 1888-98. Governor and Commander in Chief of Gold Coast 1898-1900; Governor and Commander in Chief, Barbados, 1900-04; Governor of British Guiana 1904-11. Major Commanding Gold Coast Rifle Volunteers which he raised in 1892; K.C.M.G. 3 June 1899. Married (1883) Mary Alice, daughter of William Alexander George Young, Governor of Gold Coast. Sir Frederick died in 1925".
Regards,
Zob.
