Hello Jeff, Thanks for your thoughts. Looking at the dress regs for 1883 & 1891 it says of the Forage cap badge that it is in embroidery, but then goes on to say 1st & 3rd Bns in gilt metal, the cypher and coronet in silver. There are no battle honours on the embroidered version, although it does have a coronet above. I take your point about an unadopted pattern and also wonder about the possibility that it might be from the strange period 1881 - 1883.
The glengarry descriptions are quite clear in all the regulations Silver, then Gilt, with honours.
