As this badge does not have the coronet at the top, it must date from some time between the 1870s and 1898. At that time, the helmet plate was a crowned Maltese cross with the badge in the centre of the cross. The coronet was added to the badge in 1898, and the helmet plate was changed a few years later to a large version of the badge.
