This badge appears more black than dark blue.
There is a 1860 list of uniform colours worn by some Volunteer units in Ripley and Darmanin's Rifle Volunteer Buttons book, Scarlet or red doesn't get a mention except in facings, maybe these colours for Volunteer uniforms are more likely to be later post 1881?
