As far as Infantry of the Line was concerned. most "cap" badges were issued with sliders from 1903 specifically for wear in the new pattern "cap" - ie the Brodrick. With the unlamented demise of the Brod in 1906 it was ordered that sliders be "shortened" for attachment on the new peaked forage cap. It is surmised therefore that the "long" slider was used because the badge was worn on the crown, ie above the band, of the Brod. On the peaked cap the badge was generally worn straddling the band and crown and thus lower down which would necessitate a shorter slider.
