It looks different as its been cast overseas and the lugs are typically seen on Indian sub continent made badges.

The white stuff is just polish residue that fakers cover badges in so that you cant see the rear etc. Its just another tool in their cheating toolbox, like chemicals etc.

Nick,

Just a thought but the Volunteer Force ceased to exist after 1908 so if he served until 1919 as you say he couldnt have been in the 3VB.

Something to consider before buying.
