Rob

I agree with your statement that your version is that which is still to be confirmed as original. My belief is that it is an early copy, I won't call it a dud, but that style of badge does...

The references to Gurkhas in East Africa relate to the Kashmir Rifles, 50% of the 2nd and 3rd Kashmir Rifles manpower were Gurkhas with the rest being Dogras and Punjabis.

Sorry guys, duff information (post #107) I'm afraid.

Turns out that sealed pattern 9057/1916 was for the 25th (County of London) Cyclist Battalion London Regiment and NOT for the 25th Royal...

Doesn't really further the subject but just for information here's front and back of my very poor quality "Type 3" repro/fake/copy.

grumpy has kindly replied to a pm of mine that the Gamage's catalogue doesn't carry a precise date but from internal evidence it can't be before 1916.

As I understand it the Corps of Imperial Frontiersmen lasted about 30 years as a separate organisation before re-affiliating with the Legion in the late 60s.

The Legion of Frontiersmen was formed in 1904 by Roger Pocock and it was this organisation that provided the nucleus of the 25th RF (Frontiersmen), the Imperial Frontiersmen were a later (1940s)...

Alan

There was a Sealed Pattern version of the badge authorised by the Army Clothing Department and sealed on 4th August 1916 as Pattern 9057/1916*. It was described as being of 'bronzed' gilding...

Brent

I suppose you’re right to some extent about not identifying it earlier, it was only when I compared my known good Type 4 badge with a known Type 3 copy (without the void below the grenade)...

If anything, of the 30 men in the photo, I'd say the Type 4 badge was by far the majority (about 5:1 ratio), the image I attached was the best one for comparing the two.

I do wonder if the Type 1...

From what I know of my Type 4 badge owner's service it can't be associated with the third and fourth reinforcement drafts as he'd been transferred to the Suffolk Regiment long before the drafts were...

I said in my first post here that I'm not a "collector", well that's changed over the weekend as I've brought my first badge in the last twenty years or so.

I'm now the proud owner of what is...

Brent, I follow your logic and can't really find fault with it. As you say though I guess we may never find out the reason even if someone undertakes to visit the archives as I doubt whether there's...

Thanks for posting the chronology. Whilst I agree in principle with the order I have concerns that there are, apparently, at least six versions of a badge for a battalion that only existed...

I agree that the 'garage' version was produced in the UK but I'm not sure we can claim it to be a 1918 version based on a single photograph, as Alan points out it could have been worn throughout. ...

I think you're right in that they're a standard RF badge, I don't in any way think they're specifically a 25th RF badge. After the initial battalion and a couple of reinforcement drafts...

Three CSMs and a Sergeant are wearing collar badges, they appear to be smaller versions than the officer's type.

The image was taken around the same time as that of the officers you've shown, i.e. early 1918 and is of the sergeants of the battalion.

There's an interesting mix of badges on display,...

I don't have the image per se, it was cropped from a piece of newsreel footage that actually shows the badge better. It doesn't appear to have the "IOC loop".
