Pupes and Candy Stripers

Hello

Does anyone know when the SAAF changed from the designation/rank of Pupil Pilot (P/P) to Candidate Officers (CO)?

I am also interested to know more about the cap bands and shoulder tapes worn over the years. By the 1980s COs wore white bands but photographs from the 1960s have striped bands on caps and shoulders. What colour were the stripes (light blue and black?)?

During WW2 different coloured cap bands were also worn depending on the phase of training. Can anyone confirm the colours and when what was worn?

Thanks

I got these not too long ago, listed as SAAF WW2 CO epaulettes. Yellow and black stripes, and I am also not sure if they had a matching cap band as well??? It would be great to get the transition dates from all 3 types then.

I think those might be SA Police recruits or perhaps the SAAF band. I will do a bit of digging in my files...

Here are pictures of the light blue with white edging cap bands.

My understanding is that they had plain light blue bands at first and blue ones with white edging depending on the phase of training (if anyone can confirm or correct me that would be great!).

Officer Cadets at the Military College wore white bands.

During the 1950s/1960s black and light blue striped bands were worn.

In the 1970s/1980s back to white cap bands.
