"fake" Lonsdale Btn Officers badge
 

Fakes are becoming seriously scary now. I think its time to give up!
This is the latest offering .Looks good but not quite . Opinions?

Can you explain how you know this badge to be a fake please?

To my eyes looks identical to the badges in these 2 threads which are considered genuine... the fat finger, correct voiding around beak and tongue, can even see what appears to be a hallmark in the correct place on the wing.

And this one sold by Bosley’s. Now broached but traces of the original loop and tongue are still apparent.

The bosley badge has 2 claws up (joined), all the others have an indistinct fat thumb up. Just an observation.

Phil, certain it’s just the lighting. If you zoom in 2 claws are apparent in the badge on the first thread, less apparent also because of the tarnish.

I take it these were made by a Jewelers but I wonder if they were die cast instead of die struck as you expect from a company like Gaunt?

Does anyone know how many of these badges would have been made and would it have warranted at least two versions as you have the double lug and the lug and blade versions?
The reasons that I don`t like this badge are the poor quality of the letters in the script , the poor quality of the silver and the large amount of pitting and faults in the central ribbon bow and the right rear leg .you need to enlarge the picture to see it also the lack of jeweller finishing on the reverse that you would expect from a custom made badge. It is nothing near the quality of the twin lug example as seen on Brittons badges site or the Bosleys example. The other thing that i didn`t like was that the hall mark was very rough,indistinct and appeared to have been part of the casting rather than punched in after manufacture which is the proper legal way. Considering that this is a £400 plus badge it just didn`t seem right but maybe i`m way off.

The badge in the first thread looks to have a silver hallmark on the wing.

I think that several hundred were commissioned by Lord Lonsdale !
I also would like to understand the manufacture process as well?

Maybe it’s my phone but that picture is nowhere near high enough resolution to see the faults mentioned. Do you have a better picture?

Pitting could be a sign the badge has been made from a cast made from an original, so you have the dimensions to measure it against one of the known genuine badges?
