Royal Signals NI beret badges
 

Hi All.

I am gradually putting together a small collection of Corps badges and brooches.
I have a query that I am hoping someone will be able to help with please.

In Major A.G. Harfield's book, 'Headdress, Badges and Embellishments of the Royal Corps of Signals,
the woven OR beret badge is shown on page 14, figure 17. (If you have a copy).
It shows an oval badge on a black background.
I have one of these badges.
I also have a round badge on a blue background.

Were there two patterns of badge produced for N.I.?
If the oval one is the 'correct' one, what is the round one for?

Hi Thomas. Thanks for your reply. I have seen the badge on Chris Walker's site. This has confused me more (easily done!) as he describes it as an 'oval' shaped blue background. His picture shows a round one, as is mine. Have tried to contact him but without success. His email address does not seem to work.

These were not made specifically for NI. The standard practice was to paint a a/a black.

There is an oval one shown in the Royal Signals Museum, They were made in the 1980s as a prototype and I believe worn in several units including ones in BAOR. They were not approved and did not become general issue.

The round one looks modern and possibly for cadets.

Sorry you have had a little trouble trying to get hold of me ref the Cloth Badge.

Here is a little update. One slight error on my post on the web site of mine. It was turned down by the Royal Signals Dress committee and not the Royal Artillery Dress Committee as I have on my site in 1977.

As Alan O has said on this thread there were two different colours. The Blue backed and the black backed. The original badge was the blue backed version which is the one that was turned down by the dress committee originally. I am advised that the reason for this was that when the badge got wet it tended to contract in size and become pretty unrecognisable after a period of time.

Currently there are Army Cadet Forces in the Manchester Area that continue to wear both types or colours of this badge. It was never officially adopted for regimental use other than the trial period.

Just to add to the topic I'm sure I saw the Lager if the two worn on a Dpm floppy hat in a photo of soldiers in Belize on the 1980's, in fact mine dates from this period. I think the photo appeared in Soldier magazine.
This and the cloth cap badge to the Queens Regiment were the first cloth badges I ever obtained both in the1980's
