French artillery insignia on MK II helmet

I have recently purchased this odd early WW2 MK II helmet badged to the French Artillery with a side formation sign. The metal RF badge has been soldered to the front of the helmet, but anybody knows what formation the sign painted on the side could refer to? Thank you in advance, gents!

Painted formation signs are unusual on french helmets.
