Help identifing a signals trade badge needed

Hi all,

I've just picked up this cloth badge at a fair, the dealer told me it was a signallers trade badge but couldn't explain exactly what when I asked about the crossed flags.

A different dealer had a bronze pin badge in the same design and said it was Australian.

A third dealer said this was worn by Royal Engineers of the Signals Service before the crossed flags were introduced.

Can anyone help explain the badge please?

Thanks a lot,

Michael

Michael,
It's similar to an RAF Telecommunications trade badge, There were a couple of occasions when RAF personnel inc RAF Regt wore Battledress i.e. Normandy Landings and early formation of the RAF, I don't know for sure but it could of been produced for such a time.

An interesting question that I have never quite got to the bottom of.

The badge appears to have been worn unofficially by RA Operators, Fire Control - as illustrated in this 1942 pamphlet and worn on the right arm by the gunner - but also appears in several photos worn by RTR/RAC soldiers, possibly indicating a Driver/Operator, a "wireless signals" badge for which was introduced in September 1944.

Happy to learn more.

I believe it is a 1950s badge worn by R.Signals attached to Inf Brigades.
FYI there is a lot of information on these fist trade badges in The Royal Corps of Signals: Unit Histories of the Corps (1920-2001) Supplementary Volume by Cliff Lord. See pages 276 to 280.
