Victorian LSGC to HLI

Hello All,

Recently acquired this brooched LSGC engraved to 1036 Sergt W Beaton HIGH L.I.

Might anyone have Beaton on a roll somewhere? I’m guessing 1880s or 1890s?

Thanks!!!

Mark~

Thanks Roy! I’m torn between restoring its correct suspension (an obscenely expensive endeavor these days) and leaving it as is. Still, it’s a neat one either way!

I would leave as is in this case I have a broached khedive Star that looks just fine sadly unnamed it has had a deliberate adaptation and was worn with pride.

Though if you find others to go with it then worth having suspension reattached if you can find a contemporary one.

Regards

Stephen

That’s a great point, Stephen. The discovery of a mating campaign medal or two would alter the rules of engagement considerably! And as you suggest, this sort of modification was relatively common and not at all outside the realm of contemporary practice!

It is the type with the smaller lettering to the reverse, issued 1874-1902.

These Victorian LSGC's are lovely medals.

Agreed. Aesthetically speaking, the LSGC is a particularly fine example of medallic art design.

The only brooched medal I have, I think - I have wondered if this was worn by the recipient or more likely as an attractive sweetheart brooch:

I'd never qualify for it - total abstinence - I shudder at the thought.

Hmm - on second thoughts, perhaps it the DTs that's making me shudder.

“total abstinence”, indeed... a feat of super human strength and fortitude to be sure.
