48th Highlanders Cap Badge - oddity

2 Attachment(s)
Hi folks - my first post.

I have a nice Highlander's cap badge which has come from the estate of my late father-in-law. It's been locked away in his old army box for decades so I'm pretty certain that the badge isn't a recent fake.
But for some reason, instead of the eagle facing left as it seems to do on most 48 cap badges, this one faces to the right! (Or vice versa, depending on your viewpoint)

Needless to say I can't find any information to confirm or allay any suspicions so please could someone help me.

Hello Souwesterly, welcome to the Forum. Your account is active and open for posts.
Could you provide measurements of the 48th badge please.
It is likely you have a collar badge, which were the same design as the cap badge.

Hi Bill,
And thank you for the welcome news and your reply.

First off my apologies - I notice now that I should have added that I'd like some identification to enable me to sell this badge.
We're clearing up a pile of mixed military bits and pieces accumulated by my late father-in-law, so I admit to not being a collector. Many items are easy enough to identify but this one has me foxed due to it's apparent reversed design.

Secondly my apologies again for not including dimensions...and I can therefore now add that the badge is about 29mm across and about 34mm high.

Hope that all helps

Hello Souwesterly
looks like the collar badge.
given your thinking of selling the items, maybe you could post pics of the other items on this forum and give us first crack at them?

Hi Souwesterly, with the measurements, it is a collar badge.
It would be nice to see some of the accumulation and as bc, mentions, offer the Forum first crack.

Hello people,
Thank you for your replies which have helped allay my suspicions considerably.

Truthfully I wish that I'd found this forum earlier because sales of the collection my father-in-law made have almost ended now, although inevitably there will be some items unsold. I would have loved to sell them to people whose interest was genuine and sincere.

I guess the reason why I didn't get here before we began selling them on ebay is because my Google searching was sufficiently successful so that all but a few badges were readily identifiable - without really needing to enquire of 'specialist' outlets. Not only that, my wife (who is exceptionally naive about the internet in general) can see her sales happening on ebay whereas sales here and in other outlets sales would only seen once perhaps an email arrives. I have to accept too that they're "her" badges to sell, not mine really...

I apologise therefore - if it's any consolation I'll do my best to offer you the leftovers. Not much help to you - although I wouldn't be surprised if some of you haven't already partaken in our sales on ebay anyway.
Regardless of the outcome, thank you again.
