Brass A Group Trade badge
 

Dear forum,

I have just acquired this brass A group trade badge made by J R Gaunt. I have looked on here as well as the wider web but can find little to no information on them.

Is it Great War period? Are they common?

As far as I know it belongs to the Police, not military.

I have A, B and C but dont know what they are.

They are in brass so Police wouldnt be my first thought?

Worn by Special Constables in the City of London Police 1st WW period. "A", "B" "C" D" "E" and "M" also exist.

From a note I made some time ago;
From 1936-1949, collar badges were issued to the City of London Special Constable’s to be worn on their tunic collars. They were issued for each division in letters A, B, C, D, E, M (Motorised) in brass with oak wreaths surrounding the letter. On the shoulders a one piece brass title was worn of the letters C.L.S.C. These were later 1949-1952 changed to the same letters A, B, C, D, E, M, over the letters S.C.

I have dug out some paperwork which I was sent some years ago by the Curator of the City Police Museum. He says they were worn circa 1915 to circa 1936. ABC and D were territorial divisions. E was Headquarters and M was motorised. I have had sight of a photograph showing them being worn as a cap badge during the Great War. However, that may have been an interim because of a shortage of purpose made CB's. As Marc says, they were replaced by a smaller badge showing the div. and SC as a one piece badge. That was pre. WW2. That said, there seems to be no firm date for a change.
