Supposed WW1 slouch hat shows up again
 

Hi all
I see that this hat has surfaced again with the same you tube video and explaination , I think it more likely a Militia period or early WW2 hat but not a WW1 ......... Thoughts.

Hello Guys, Happy Australia Day.

Well knock me down with a feather !!

Just a few things wrong with is one.

Firstly the crown is not high enough at the front.
The crown should be quite flat where the very deep bash is.
The Rising Sun is a WW 2 issue.
and the "Kangaroo feathers" are on the wrong side of the crown.

Just for starters.

i agree, this is probably not a ww1 hat but you said crown is not high enough at the front. what do you mean by this? surely with the many different manufacturers and personal bashing of hat there would be variations? or do the crowns vary from period to period?
you also say its a ww2 rising sun, but what makes this a ww2 version?

Happy Aussie day guys,

Allowing that I cant post photos, go to the bottom line of the Aust section with photographs there are 3 or 4 good photos of WW 1 slouches in the posts by Drummajor (thanks Phil), Lettman (3 threads) and Whistle (2 photos in the one thread) and you will see what I mean, the rise in the front is at least 2"/50mm higher than a WW 2 slouch and mostly the crown is flat and wide rather than a deep narrow bash as seen in the photos in the original post.

im not really sure what you mean?
here are several slouch hats. can they really be dated to an era/period from the shape of the crown and as in the youtube video the size of the brim?
some of the hats here were worn across several eras and some have had the badge/pugarees added or removed. but what period are they

A felt hat, as worn by a New Zealand machine gun section ,Trooper , in Egypt /Sinai /Palestine in WW1 .


These were replacement British manufactured felt hats ,and sometimes worn with the plain puggaree or with a standard New Zealand Mounted rifles puggaree over the top of the plain one .


A wonder how many of these have been misidentified as A.I.F

Thanks for the reply and photo of hat , but I am still of the opinion that the hat on ebay is a Militia or very early WW2 hat not the same as you have shown as the vents,edge stitching and button are different .

This is a British made Slouch hat ( dated 1918 and marker marked) worn by an Australian chap from the AFC have photo of him wearing hat , notice it is the same type of hat you show Iain so these were made for both NZ and Aust soldiers .

Yes Rob, three bands on stitching on the rim ,and the dome is the same.


There must have been occasions ,when Australian and New Zealand soldiers in WW1,had the same replacement felt hats .
