Help Identifying a Regiment

Hello,
Can anyone help to identify the regiment on the attached photo. It was taken in Egypt in July 1948. I'd say it belonged to a Scottish regiment. Also, what rank would the soldier have held?

Highland Light Infantry? He appears to be a private.

I would agree HLI. And their 1st Bn was in Egypt in 1948.

No visible rank badges so presumably a Private.

What about the red tabs, sure it isn't South African?
