What were 'Helmets, UK'

I've found a number of references to 'Helmets, UK' during the 1939-45 period. I suspect they were a version of the Wolseley helmet that was produced in the UK and issued prior to embarkation.

Can any one enlighten me further please?

I don't know how to attach a pdf but if you click on this link https://www.google.com.au/?gws_rd=ss...=1496382161165 the third one down is The Story of Helmets Integrated Systems Ltd.

It's a 32 page booklet about Helmets Ltd., Wheathampsted 1924-1984. Hopefully it'll be of some help.

This site says they designed the MKI liner in 1936 http://nuke.combat-helmets.com/World...9/Default.aspx

Helmets UK

Tony,

Thank you, an interesting read. I'm still none the wiser about what exactly a Helmet UK was though.

Stephen.

Helmets UK

Mike,

That I understood, but Helmet, UK is a descriptive term for an item of issue headdress during 1939-45 period. I suspect that the item is a Wolseley type helmet, which would fit with the manufacturer, but why use that as a descriptor instead of solar helmet, or Wolseley helmet etc. There must have been a specific difference between Wolseley helmets and Helmets, UK as all of the latter were withdrawn from service in West Africa but other solar helmets apparently remained in use.

Stephen.

Stephen,

It's Helmets, Universal, Khaki which is the later Ordnance description for what were originally referred to as Wolseley helmets. Details from National Archives Class WO359 - War Office: Army Clothing Department - Register of Changes.

Middle East General Routine Order 366, 9th October 1942 instructs that Helmets, Universal, Khaki were no longer to be issued to the 8th Army.
