Tank Corps 'blues' walking out dress 'TC' shoulder badge
 

Hello
Has anyone got a photo of the above badge being worn.
Its white TC on a black oblong cloth backing. The 'TC' are the same size lettering as the khaki ones.
I've also been informed that this badge is quite rare? Is this the case please?

Hi, I don't have a photo of it being worn, but I do have one, in fact it is the only one I've ever seen, don't know if that helps Mike

The RTR 100 issue of The Formation Sign illustrates this badge as shown with the khaki version but queries what it was worn on.

It would be interesting to see if anyone can shed light on it.

Hi Jon, mechanics as early as 1916 were wearing dark blue or black overalls according to M Windrow and crew were wearing black overalls before the official acceptance in 1935, so maybe that was what they were for, work wear. The pair I have are not typical British manufacture, so I would guess Indian pre 1923, hence their rarity? Oil stains would show up much more on tropical dress so I can imagine they would be more likely to adopt black work wear, hope this helps Mike

I actually have one of these badges.
When I was stationed in Colchester many moons ago, I popped into a Taylor's shop to sort my mess dress and got talking to the chap who ran it.
He said it was there well before WW1 and he had round the back loads of small cardboard boxes with various cloth and metal badges collected over the years by his Father etc, all for use in the shop. He said he was keeping them all like a small museum in his own shop, fair enough.
He agreed to show me these boxes and some of the badges!! Wow, pre WW1 titles all the way to sixties.
Anyway, a small box with TC titles on it caught my eye, in it were about 30 odd of the white on black TC titles, and a small bit of paper saying 'blue walking out'.
The chap knew I was interested so he gave me one if these titles. I do wish I'd visited the shop again, I was sent on op tour then posted! This was about 15 years ago.
Sorry for the long story, I've no idea why Colchester, and not Bovington, but there we go!

A clue as to Colchester may be here,
My Grandfather was recalled to the army in July 1939 and, despite being a Tank man who went to Bovington in 1923 was sent to Colchester.
My father was born there and was Christened in the garrison church.
So, they could link to that era.

Hi 3DG, that is exactly the same as mine. The construction, if you lift the paper, is totally different to the khaki TC. All very interesting and confusing in equal amounts, best wishes Mike

And yes Fearnaught, the construction of the badge is very good, seems to be Hessian in between the cloth and paper, a very well made badge!
