153rd Gurkha Parachute Battalion

These came to me this week from my old friend Norfolk rgt Man
Myself and another Indian Army collector believe these to be related to 153rd Gurkha Parachute Battalion. Has anyone seen evidence of thier use on shoulders or bush hat? Regards Kevin

Here is a site with a little bit of info. on the unit: http://www.paradata.org.uk/media/443...mediaItem=3801 . There is also a history of the unit, available on Amazon.

The unit was in existence long enough for theatre made badges to have been made and issued. I think the remnants of black paint on them is a good sign - a refinement I don't believe an Indian bazaar wallah would bother with. [unless you paid a bunble for these?]

So, I'd say they look good, pending other more authoritative views!

Thanks Peter , I had found that site but little else and yes the badges came from a pretty sound source and cost very little. I think it may be too much to ask to see a picture of these being worn as the unit was fairly short lived and seems to have suffered badly just before Kohima. 2nd Suffolks wore a small X11 on bush hat in Burma so I wondered if these would turn out to be a similar thing although suspect they are shoulder titles. Kevin,

These are shoulder titles for 153 (gurkha) Para bat. I had a pair off norfolk regt man as well and have researched them with the museum.

The only other unit to wear this title was a short lived WWI unit the 153 Punjabis. They wore plain brass so the traces of the black paint are good for the Gurkha Bat. As Rifles they were painted black.

Titles for 153 & 154 were local made items. An embroiderd badge was worn on the Gurkha felt hat. Officers had a bullion beret badge.

Steve

I wasnt sure when I got them off you I just knew they were Indian Army, but a trip to the museum at winchester was worth while. Now I just need to find the '154' to go with it!

Kind regards

Steve M.
