I think it's a foreign service helmet badge.

Hello Keith,

Sounds like a more original use for this badge!

However, I have seen a couple mounted onto white buff leather pouches possibly for bandsmen? Perhaps a few found a second home after their original Foreign Service use.

Kind regards, Malcolm.

Suffolk badge

I had one of these which had a pin originally, possibly for a pagri. In RJ Wyatt's book "Collecting Volunteer Militaria"he has an illustration of one on a bandsmans case attributed to 2nd VB Suffolk.

I found this illustration in The history of the 12th Suffolk Regiment published in 1914 by subscription from the officers of the Regiment and presented to the officers of the Norfolk regiment. It is a beautiful leather bound book and has a section on the Badges of the Regiment.

I have uploaded a pic of a silver version of the badge you have pictured. I have it as an Suffolk Regiment Officers Overseas Service Helmet Plate in unmarked silver. Quite a wonderful badge and have appreciated seeing the link to have confirmation of its identity.

Hope this helps all, cheers Dean.

P.S. The silver badge is 63x55mm hence matching prior post description.

Cheers Dean

Hi Dean,
just spotted your post on not having any responses to your posted badge, thought i would look it up. Possibly the reason you have not had a response is the image is slightly blurred so it is difficult to tell whether the badge is right or one of the recent multitude of `silver` stamped badges that have flooded the market. May i suggest that you post a sharper picture front and back. You might consider using a scanner rather than a camera as i find it much easier. For what its worth i have not heard of this badge being reproed and from what i can see, looks ok. If it is a right un, you have an excellent find here, well done!

Cheers, Dave

more of the same

Hi all. Can I just "put my spoke in" ?
In my view, the brass badge posted by monty is a bandsmans pouch ornt.
The same design in silver (posted by mooke) is an officers FS Helmet and Field Service cap badge c.1898 (see Regt Hist p409 as shown by James G).

However, there was a silver badge of exactly the same design, but without the title scroll, as worn on the officers glengarry cap from 1881 to 1894 (see Regt Hist p408 and Army Dress Regs 1883 p 133). There was also an officers glengarry cap badge of a similar design prior to 1881 but incorporating the figs XII below the castle with the key above.
Hope this doesn't "muddy the waters" too much ! Regards Jeff

Thanks Jeff,

I for one am very happy with you putting your spoke in. What a delight to have the definitive reference for my silver version with the date. Much appreciated. I will post photos front and back as put my scan on and it isn't very clear. I have the badge from a fellow collector and badge mentor to me and have been very happy with it and now more so.

Best regards Dean.:)
