Unknown BEF patch

Could anyone help me with this?
Im assuming BEF is British expeditionary force but what is the badge actually for?

it measures 6x4cm

any pointers appreciated.

There are a number of BEF flashes, depending on maker.

They were sold to the troops who escaped from France in 1940. I don't know if they were actually worn though.
