2nd Australian Army Formation Sign?

2 Attachment(s)
Good day gentlemen

I got this attached patch in a job lot a year ago and it has been a bit of a puzzle, however I now think I’ve successfully ID’d it as 2nd Australian Army. What I’d like to know is am I right in my identification? Is it a genuine item? It appears to be unused, a loose thread burned, rather than melted, so is not man-made fibre. It does, however, feel soft unlike unissued British printed signs which are often stiff. And is it possible to give a date for it’s use?

Caveat: once these questions are answered to my satisfaction it will be available for swap or sale (or the bin, if a fake).

Thanks for looking

Graham

Graham,

Correct ID.

Worn from c.1942 in Australia only.

Looks original.

Sorry gents - these formation patches were never worn in Australia during WW2.

The Australian Army only had formation patches after WW2.

I believe they are vehicle formation signs that someone has made into (fantasy) patches.

Regards,

Mick

Second Aust Army

I'm sure we'll get the expert opinion from Australia but I have always believed that the 2 AIF formation signs were only borne on signboards and vehicles. The Second Aust Army colour patch - worn on uniform - was a square, divided vertically Scarlet/Black/Scarlet.(GRO 149/42). Many (25) of the designs for the pictorial formation Signs are contained in Howard Cole's Heraldry in War. Mike

That's correct Mike.

These formation signs were only for signs and vehicles.

These and related 'signs' turn up frequently in both printed and embroidered form -- they are fakes, the lot of them, never worn.
