Scottish Horse
 
Scottish Horse 2nd Bn, 2nd Contingent 1901/2.
Die-struck bronze badge of 35mm with a mustard coloured pinked cloth backing, two copper loops and a flat wire cotter pin.
Raised by the Marquess of Tulibardine in South Africa, his father the Duke of Atholl sent 830 men, the Highland Society of London 386 and the Caledonian Society of Melbourne 250.
To each of the two regiments were attached a troop of 25 selected scouts who drew extra pay and were excused all guards and pickets. With each of these troops were some 15 Zulus provided with Boer ponies. There was also a troop of 50 picked cyclists.
2nd Bn commanded by Bt Major Fredrick Dymoke Murray Black Watch killed at Bakenlaagte 30th Oct 1901.

This is an awesome badge to get on the original backing. My understanding is that this badge was issued in Scotland to the men raised there. Maybe even the first group to come to SA as the Scottish Horse. A rare item indeed. Well done. Regards Andrew

You would certainly have originally attested into the IY rather than the SAMIF to have that particular badge, they are also extant without the bronze finish, very nice.
