How to add a link to a post:

URLs

pages, images, etc on the internet are uniquely referenced with a URL ... a Uniform Resource Locator. To share a page with others over the internet - we have to Link to that page, that is, share the URL with others.

Where is the URL?

your browser normally shows the URL of the page you are viewing in the top of its frame and looks like this:

https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/images3/urls.jpg

Sharing the link

So in our case all that is required to share the link with others is to copy that text into a post. In windows, place your mouse pointer over the text and right click. This will highlight the text and open a menu with a copy option. Copy the text then return to your post and right click in the message drafting box and select paste from the resultant menu, and you're done.

So what are the link buttons for?

The Link button provides a more 'tidy' way of displaying a link:

copy the URL as above, but highlight some text in the post instead, the click the insert link button (the left one of the pair, a pop-up will appear into which the URL can be pasted, click ok.

so the link now appears like this:

Here is ebay's WW1 Badge Secton.

which is better than:

Here is ebay's WW1 Badge Section: http://collectables.shop.ebay.co.uk/World-War-I-1914-1918-/13962/i.html?rt=nc&Type=Badges&_dmd=1&_dmpt=UK_Collectab les_Militaria_LE&_fln=1&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m 282

If you have images already uploaded somewhere on the Internet, photo-hosting/sharing sites etc., or you have permission to link to someone else's image, then you can display that image in your post by linking to it in a similar fashion as above. Copy the URL of the image, click the insert image, in the popup that appears paste the url, and the image will appear in your post.

Adding a photo from your computer:

when you are ready to attach your image:
In the reply to thread message box (or post new thread message box if you are starting a new one)
click on the attachment icon, (the paperclip on the top row of buttons) ringed here

this will open the "manage attachments" window;
click on the browse button which will in turn open the 'choose file' window on your PC. (not shown here)

browse to the picture file on your computer and select it.
its location on your computer will appear in the appropriate
place on the manage attachments window.

click the top "Upload" button

In a few seconds the details of the image should appear in the manage attachments window if the upload was successful as "Current Attachments" (arrowed in the picture)

unless you want to add another image (just repeat the same steps), that's it.

Close the manage attachments window and carry on writing your message - or submit the message if you were finished anyway.

(note: you wont see any reference to the image in the actual message field until you submit it)
