Can anyone help please...Who, When, Where, Why etc did Life guard Officers wear a red patch behind badge as shown?

As I said to you in the other thread, I am sure I have never seen a good clear portrait image of any officer in this regiment actually wearing service dress, with cloth on the reverse of his cap badge.
It is certainly old cloth and they may well have been together for many years.

I had EIIR brass one with a red backing. Well, I technically still do but as I don't mount my badges with backing I separated them. Unfortunately, the backing is buried away somewhere so I cannot combine and photograph.

Sorry that I cannot throw any more light as to when and on what.

Just looking again at the photographs, the scarlet cloth looks rather uneven and a little "ragged" in particular around the upper portion of the cap badge, I would be more than surprised to actually see any officer wearing such on his SD cap.
