Lord Strathcona's Horse

I have these two badges of Lords Stractonas Horse. They have also different dimensions. I think that the Scully is good, while the Gaunt is a copy. Right?

I think that they are both O.K. The LdSH is an old regiment that had subtle changes to it's badge over the years. Check out the tree and the position of the beaver. The badge was manufactured in England and in Canada by different companies so you will get slight variations in size. There was a good topic on the forum re dating the badge by position of the beaver but I can't seem to find it. Maybe somone else can refresh my memory. Jim

This from whizzbang: 12/08/09

Pre-WW1 (1908-1911 pattern): A lone tree above the coat of arms and no beaver. No 'Lord' in title (just 'Strathcona's Horse Royal Canadians'). A smaller badge than later patterns.

WW1/CEF: two patterns. The earlier one has the beaver coming up to the tree but not touching it (as shown in the CEF gallery). The later pattern has the beaver at the tree and this is the one shown in many reference books (e.g., Charlton, Babin, Cox and Victor Taboika's book). However, now that I look closely, the tree tends to be a bit more separated from the "Perseverance" scroll than in bc's example. However, the tree is still standing.

Post-WW1: I don't know as much about this period but the beaver appears to start bringing the tree down...it gets quite a tilt to it!

The Scully marked badge is an excellent example of the issue associated with WW2. Few Strathcona's badges are maker marked, and that adds to your example. And, there doesn't appear to be fraudulent Scully marks being used in the badge market. (Yet.)
The first badge is the one associated with the CEF. It was discussed in this thread, http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7144&highlight=strathcona's.
By coincidence, Chris Brooker has one of these on auction right now. A comparison with his lot seems to be a badge from the same die. Note the "distant" beaver on both badges, etc, etc... http://cgi.ebay.com/CANADA-L-S-H-R-C...4#ht_500wt_975.
Just a note for posting. The "tag" feature can be used to find posts within threads that have titles that don't reflect the contents. Adding "tags" helps search functions. I used the word Strathcona's as a tag in the string above and that helped me when I searched the forum.

Urban Legend?????

I hear that the tree was straight up during the lifetime of Lord Strathcona and it was falling after he died......

Urban Legend?????

Mike, I think that belief is the stuff of myth. The 1912 pattern of the badge has the beaver felling the tree. Mazeas, MC8, page 32. And Ld Strathcona didn't die until 1914.

.. my doubts on the Gaunt badge because is new and shiny, but probably never used ..... and really thank you all for your complete and clear information (as always )... grazie!

There seem to be a large number of the Lord Strathcona's Gaunt badges turning up in the last couple of years. I would be curious to know the source.

Phil makes a good point - there's been way too many mint Gaunt badges to the Strathcona's turn up lately. I believe they are modern repops. (There are a lot of Gaunt marked First Hussars badges around too that I think are repops)

I agree - there do seem to be quite a few of these badges around. Not being sold by the most prolific purveyors of trash on e-bay though (two or three come to mind) . The Gaunt plaques on these badges are also not of the 'usual' style - crisper strike and a cleaner, slightly larger font. I made a post a few weeks ago about this type of Gaunt plaque - I have it on three badges, an RND Hood badge, one of the minty CEF MG badges (3rd MG?) and the subject LSH badge: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...t=Gaunt+plaque
Again, I wonder if these are badges made towards the end of the war and not distributed - would explain minty condition. I don't want these to be fake badges, but would rather weed them out than delude myself!

Cheers, Ian.

The two badges are dimensional quite different:

gaunt scully

height (mm) 41 45,8
width (mm) 36,7 37,9
weight (gr) 8,45 11,62

Not enthused about that badge.

Darrell 24-09-17 06:59 PM
