The QOLI are one of the Tower Hamlets Milita regiments. Your badge is an officers shako plate.

Thanks Keith and Brian - thought that it was a Tower Hamlets unit but cannot find a reference to the badge in Wilkinson or on the 'net. Go well Alan

Good evening Alan.

As already stated by Keith, it is a an Officer's Shako badge, 1856 - 1861 and I believe 1st Tower Hamlets Militia.

I have an other ranks badge to this unit:

Attachment 183784

However, it is quite possible that my example is to the 2nd TH Militia.

If you Google "The Queen's Light Infantry Militia Tower Hamlets" and search on the images, you will find other examples of badges to this unit.

Hopefully I won't get into trouble copying the following picture; it shows your, (well maybe not your actual badge :D) on the Shako.

Attachment 183782

In 1881, they became the 5th Battalion, The Rifle Brigade.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

Brian

Note the six o clock star ray is shorter than the others, quite common on these officers plates and I beleive done as an economy measure when the shako changed slightly and the existing plates didn’t fit correctly.

Much appreciated. Thank you. Go well Alan
