FAA Shoulder Boards and Cuff Insignia

Hi, guys, a newbie question.

I've just started researching Fleet Air Arm uniforms from WWII.

I have noted that many of the shoulder boards and sleeve/cuff insignia have a 'squared' circle rather than the rounded style seen on RN uniforms. Am I confusing this with Volunteer Reserve type designation or was there generally a difference for the FAA.

Thanks in advance for your help

The squared ring and wavy stripe would be RNVR but part of the FAA. Regular Navy in the FAA would have had the standard straight stripe with ring.

Alex

Alex, thanks for the quick reply.

I'm struggling at the moment to find any photos of a FAA uniform with the ring in WWII.

If anyone can find anything I'd be very grateful.

Cheers

The officer you show in your picture is an officer of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) Air Branch. The 'A' shown identifies them as part of the Air branch of the Fleet Air Arm. This signified that they were pilots or observers. Most of the aircrew in the Fleet Air Arm during WWII were members of the RNVR.

Yes, I would think most of the WWII FAA members were 'Hostilities Only' so RNVR. I have a group photo of FAA Sub-Lts and they are all wearing the wavy-navy stripes and square curl.
Cheers,
Alex

Try here for something different. A Warrant Observer, but rank insignia is straight braid and ring with "A".

These were given to me some time back by a kind forum member. Classic WW2 sleeve lace that only went half way around the cuff.......

Very nice, just got a couple of barathea jackets in poor condition that I'll be taking details like that from.

Just won this at auction too.

Can someone talk me through the differences - are those gunners' rather than observers' badges on the right?

And is the red WWII also?

Hi The badges on the right are RN Aircrewman Qualification badges worn on the sleeve Above cuff
Gold Braid no1 dress Red Embroidery No2 Dress
I would be very interested in purchasing one of the Gold Braid aircremans badges please I will pay well for it
I served in the FAA in 1980s and served as an Aircrewman I no longer have my wings this would mean a lot to me

Thanks
