Hi All
I got this today and would like to know what it is. It looks like the Victorian button used by Colonels & Brigadiers but the crown position and style is different to the example shown in Ripley's book. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Cheers, Alex |
Royal Household livery button?

Hello Alex
I have one of these buttons as well and have always thought it to be a 'Court' button rather than a military one. The design does turn up from time to time but not as often as the standard 'Colonels' rank one. It may just be a manufacturer's variation but I think this is unlikely as I see yours is by Pitt & Co whereas mine is by Jennens, so there were at least two manufacturers producing this design, unusual for a simple variation or error in design. Hopefully someone else may have a little more information. Roger |

It always pays to search before you ask, a 23mm Firmin & Sons London to add to the list.
Could they be an earlier or later pattern of Colonel's button? Rob |
British Buttons by Dennis G. Blair has this one identified as one of the two VR patterns worn by H.M. Equerries and Aides-de-Camp, former Regular Army Officers.

Thanks David!

Somehow I can't reconcile myself to the design of the 'VR' which is not a cypher, more of an ornate monogram. Only my opinion.
