I don't believe it is a NZ WW2 Div Sigs patch. If it is 3 inches long and 1 and a half inches high it may be a 1928 distinguishing patch for signals which was worn white to the top. All the ones I have seen have been padded. They last up until the beginning of WW2 and perhaps a little beyond.

The size fits. Does it look like it has had padding taken out of it? The material does not look quite right. Perhaps some one who has one of these patches could send a photo of it to compare.

Hi Cliff and bc,
Not sure if this helps. Here is a patch for comparison. Measures 7cm wide X 6.5 cm high approx.
Is it upside down?
Cheers, Tinto

This appears to be a WW2 type 1 patch which was worn at the beginning of WW2 by NZ Forces on the troop ships going to Egypt. The type 1 series was soon replaced by a smaller series overseas. The large type 1 series was also worn for a while by 1 4 and 5 Divisions in New Zealand. NZ Army Distinguishing Patches 1911-1991 has fairly comprehensive details on the patch systems.

As I mentioned previously the material on your oblong patch appears to be different to the 1928 Signals patch.

Think I have confused you. It was late last night when I replied. Did not notice that it was Tinto that had sent the latest pix and of course he knows his badges and patches. The pix he sent showed a type 1 patch of WW2 NZCS. He was showing the material used. The 1928 patches I have seen and had, no more than half a dozen, were padded with a backing on it. The material is a little different from the material you show on your oblong patch. That I can not explain. However the shape and dimensions make it look like a 1928 patch.
