A mystery to me

Greetings all.
this just walked in my door. Young lad got it from his g-grandfather. It was in a small group of CEF pieces, but I am guessing British. I've had a couple goes through K&K and Churchill and Westlake with no luck. It might be the eyes, not sure. Anyway, have at it with many thanks. phil |
I've got a couple. Tentatively ID'd as an arm badge for a military school (Duke of Yorks?).
I'll try to track it down tomorrow, Ian H |
Thanks Ian. That's helpful.

Worn above four chevrons (point up) on the cuff by Quartermaster Sergeants.

RQMS worn above 4 chevrons on the lower arm. Pre-1915 I think.

This is really interesting. I've tried to google an image with no success. Any suggestions as to a reference volume to look at? Thanks.

found a line drawing in a Soldier of Fortune magazine. Suggests only WW1.

The 8 pointed star is often described as an East Yorks Collar badge but is not as we have established above. Regularly seen on Ebay mis described. regards |
Sleeve of a Royal Artillery Tunic, showing the gold wire embroidered star worn c1881 to c1915, brass star introduced in 1902.

Indeed, Simon, the magazine was incorrect as I found a Victorian Ranks chart a little later, but the image was painfully small to see. Just couldn't find an image on a uniform.
Marc, that is a terrific image. Very clearly defines the rank and affinity to the guns. Thanks very much all. I shall pass this on to my young friend with the rank badge. phil |
